Phase 2: Tracing Race - Exploring the Journey of Asian Women in STEM at ISU

As the “Exploring the Journey of Asian Women in STEM at ISU” project comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude and reflection on this profound journey of discovery and empowerment. This initiative began as a comprehensive exploration of narratives, challenges, and triumphs experienced by Asian women faculty members in STEM fields at Iowa State University (ISU). Now, after completing two phases and creating a platform for these narratives to be heard, it’s time to reflect on what this project has meant to me both professionally and personally.

Professionally, this project has been a transformative experience. It has allowed me to develop a deep understanding through the stories of remarkable women who have made significant contributions to their fields despite facing unique challenges. Through conducting oral history interviews and building a multimedia website, I have developed my skills in research, storytelling, and digital communication. Working with the ISU library team, especially those overseeing the Tracing Race project, has been invaluable, providing me with insights and technical expertise that have enhanced the project’s impact.

One of the key features of the project was the integration of OHD, which allowed for the analysis and publication of coded oral history or qualitative interview files. This integration not only made the interviews more accessible but also provided users with a more engaging and immersive experience.

Through the use of theme and color coding, the interviews were organized and presented in a way that highlighted key themes and topics. Each interview was color-coded based on the themes discussed, making it easier for users to navigate and explore specific topics of interest. This approach not only increased the accessibility of the interviews but also made it more effective in conveying the diverse experiences and perspectives of Asian women in STEM at ISU. Personally, this project has been deeply meaningful. It has opened my eyes to the importance of inclusivity and diversity in academia, highlighting the need to amplify underrepresented voices. Hearing the stories of these women has been inspiring and has reaffirmed my belief in the power of storytelling to create understanding and empathy.

As we conclude this project, I invite you to explore our website and these inspiring interviews. I hope their stories will inspire others to pursue their dreams despite any obstacles they may face.
